SKHALTA CHURCH

Skhalta Church, dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God, is located in Adjara, on the right bank of the Skhaltistsqali River, approximately 80 km east of Batumi. It was built in the mid-thirteenth century. The church is a single-nave structure with a projecting apse sanctuary. The façades are faced with smoothly hewn sandstone blocks. The interior of Skhalta Church was painted in the late fourteenth century. The porches in front of the southern and western doors, and the chapel located five meters southeast of the church, were restored in the 2000s Musical composition “Chubina” by Levan Bantsadze and Giorgi Matkava
