ELENE AKHVLEDIANI

Elene Akhvlediani - ელენე ახვლედიანი (1901-1975) is a painter, graphic artist, theater and cinema artist. She is considered as a pioneer of urban landscape in Georgian modernism. He was born in Telavi (Kakheti) in the family of Dr. Dimitri Akhvlediani and Elisabeth Eristavi. In 1922, he studied at the Tbilisi Art Academy. G. Gabashvili was a teacher of Elene Akhvlediani. In the same year, as a scholarship holder of the Academy, he continued his studies at the Collaros Academy in Paris (1922–1927). He returned to his homeland in 1927. Akhvlediani's distinct individuality and self-identity was revealed in all genres of the artist. Her paintings are noted for the combination of decorative and painterly treatment - the use of a multitude of concrete details and generalized, almost abstract elements, the impression of depth and two-dimensionality, careful attention to detail, and application of broad, flat brushstrokes.
