Salome Dumbadze (სალომე დუმბაძე - 1992) lives and works in Tbilisi, Georgia. Dumbadze’s practice is rooted in painting, but she also works in various media, such as video and installation. She studied painting at the Tbilisi State Academy of Art between 2014 - 2010 and accomplished informal MFA in contemporary art practice at the CCA Tbilisi in 2016. In her practice, Dumbadze subverts the male-dominated history of Georgian painting through style, the usage of color scheme and subject matter. Working predominantly in oil and oil-based pigment on canvas, Dumbadze alludes to motifs of the 12th and 13th century canonic Georgian Orthodox wall painting, especially by taking the decorative elements of organizing the space in the interior of these monasteries and transforming them into framed paintings. Here the frames stand for decoration, structure and a political position of care. Dumbadze has had three solo exhibitions in Georgia and participated in various group exhibitions in Georgia and abroad.
